Week One – The Basics
What do we need to do to sound ‘Generally American’? Also, what does that even mean?  We explore the Top Ten Giveaways for actors working in US accents, and how to avoid them at all costs. This session will have a  technical focus, building knowledge and skills that will then be applied to text and/or improvisation.

Week Two – Step-Up
In this session you will continue to apply and develop what you have learnt so far through a lot of text and/or improvisation work. You will also begin individual work on the speech/monologue that you would like to record.

Week Three – Text & Technique
Speeches/monologues are to be memorised for this session and ready to be rigorously worked through.

Week Four – Performance Conditions
How do you keep doing good accent work while acting well? What do you do when everything goes wrong? In this last workshop session, you will have monologues performance ready for the recording session and will be coached in not only the technicalities of the accents, but how the accent work can help your acting choices.

Week 5 – Recording Session
Actors will have a 20 minute professional recording session where they will record a 30-45 second speech that matches their casting and showcases their General American Accent. This will then be professionally edited and sound balanced, and sent to you within 7 working days for you to use as a professional voice clip  on your Spotlight page or as part of a voice reel.

“The best thing about this workshop is how well Carter catered to everyones specific needs and flaws when it came to the accent. He taught us how to sound natural and showed us examples of how there isn’t one specific way of doing a General American accent. He boosted my confidence and a timely American audition came just as the workshop came to an end. Actors Ascend always provide good workshops with substance that sharpen your skill set :)”

KIKE BRIMAH

“Thanks to Ascend Actors for running this. The course was useful and enjoyable, with a supportive atmosphere created by the team (producer, tutor, and students). The recording session at the end was great to have as a focus throughout without being a pressure or distraction. Definitely recommend. “

Working in Regional Theatre

Working in the West End is great, but working in regional theatre is where an actor can really build their craft without the West End performance anxiety and pressure! The Royal Exchange, Salisbury Playhouse and Theatre Royal Bath, are great regional theatres producing exceptional work and providing numerous actors with great theatre experience that can open doors here in London.

This workshop with Gareth Machin (Artistic Director of Salisbury Playhouse) is a welcomed breath of fresh air. Putting away the chairs and reclaiming the workshop space as a rehearsal room, Gareth aims to collectively explore a play through scene work and theatre audition technique. You’ll think your back a Drama School for a minute!

The class will work on a play that Gareth will send to the class to read before hand.

Reclaiming the TV Audition – How to Combat Nerves –

It’s common and okay to be nervous in a TV audition. Nerves can come from all sorts of places and reasons, but dont let nerves be the reason you dont get the job. But when the nerves take over and do not allow you to give your best performance, that’s when we need to worry!

No matter how long the audition is, it is your time to shine. To show the Director who you are, your opinions of the script and also your acting skill and that you can take direction. Don’t be nervous, be excited!

This new workshop with experienced screen Director Christiana Ebohon-Green aims to give actors more confidence by working with a well established screen Director. Actors will work on improving their screen audition technique by understanding what exactly a Director needs to see from an actor in order to choose them for the role. Scripts will be used in this workshop.

The most common TV auditions nowadays are for guest roles; guest roles that can last a day, a week or even months. But as we all know, consistently booking screen roles is not an easy task!

This new workshop with experienced screen Director Christiana Ebohon-Green aims to give actors the chance to work with a well established screen Director in order to improve their screen acting skills, audition technique and to understand what exactly a Director needs to see from an actor in order to specifically choose them for the role.

Christiana Ebohon-Green is an award winning drama Director, with fifteen years experience in the industry. She has just finished directing two episodes of Grantchester (ITV) and The Mallorca Files (BBC One).  She has directed many episodes of the most watched BBC, ITV and Channel 4 TV shows on our screens. Her credits include Father Brown (BBC), Doctors (BBC), Eastenders (BBC), Emmerdale (ITV) and Hollyoaks (Channel 4).

SCREEN ACTING AND AUDITION WORKSHOP

We love working with Jermain Julien, or as we call him The Actor’s Director, because he knows how to work with actors to get the best out of them. We think he was one in a previous life and therefore couldn’t think of a better workshop to kick off our trilogy.

This workshop aims to help you get the job when you’re in the door, whether it be stage or screen.

Jermain believes in the ethos of always being ‘Match Fit; ready to breakdown, analyse and perform a character at any time. Therefore, the more you work on these skills, the more they’ll come naturally to you, and the more ‘audition ready’ you’ll be.

Through scenes Jermain’s will aim to sharpen and strengthen those all important audition muscles and provide you with practical strategies to stay on your ‘A Game’ for when the audition you have prepared for, comes.

We love Jermain’s teaching style and cannot wait to work with him again.
